In antiquity foccacia was a main dish in the Roman Empire. In Gaeta,Southern Italy the word "pizza" was first used in 997 BC.

In Naples in 16th century , pizza was a food for poor people because it was just flat bread with tomatoes on top. In the streets people used to prepare pizza and the visitors thought it was a delicious dish. After two hundred years there were more than fifty pizza places in Naples as mentioned in the State Archives and it was double in just fifty years. The writer Alexander Dumas mentioned the wide variety of pizza toppings.

On 11 th June 1889 Esposito, a pizzamaker from Naples created the pizza named Magherita. It had tomatoes , mozzarella and basil, the colours of the Italian flag. It was called after Queen Magherita.

Pizza became known after World War II when the soldiers spread the pizza recipe all over the world. After 2000 UNESCO added pizza Napoletana on Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
